How it works

Dimpy is its own chat in the app you already text in. You text it in plain words. Add it to a group chat and anyone there can @Dimpy too. It only ever reads messages sent to it.

  1. Add Dimpy.

Sign in with Google and connect the app you text in. The pilot starts with iMessage and GroupMe. Paste your Canvas calendar feed link if you want due dates too. Nothing to install.

  2. Text it.

Say what you need the way you'd say it to a friend: a plan to add, a reminder, what's due. In a group chat, anyone can @Dimpy, and the plan goes on their own Dimpy calendar. Dimpy answers in the group, where everyone can see it.

A group chat called Intramural soccer in a group chat app. Alex: soccer thursday 6pm at the rec fields. Priya: in. Chris: can we not lose this time. Jas: lol no promises. Alex: update: field's booked, moved to 7:30. Priya: still in. Chris: bet, with three hearts. Priya: @Dimpy add soccer thursday 7:30 at the rec fields. Dimpy, in the group: Added to Priya's Dimpy calendar: Soccer, Thursday at 7:30 PM, the rec fields. Anyone else, just @ me.

  3. Done.

Plans you say yes to go on a Dimpy calendar inside your Google Calendar. Reminders go off when you asked. The morning brief lands at 7:30.

Questions

When can I use it?

Not yet. It's coming soon, and the pilot starts small. The waitlist gets an email when spots open.

Which apps does it work in?

The pilot starts with iMessage and GroupMe. SMS, WhatsApp and Discord come next, in whatever order the waitlist answers point to. Each depends on how the pilot goes and on what each app allows.

Does it read my friends' messages?

No. Dimpy only reads messages sent to it: what you text it, and in a group, messages that start with @Dimpy. Everything else in the chat stays between you and your friends.

Will my friends see Dimpy in our chat?

Yes, if you add it. It shows up as a member, everyone sees what it says, and anyone can remove it. If you never add it to a group, it lives only in your own Dimpy chat.

Can it get things wrong?

Yes. AI models misread things: a wrong time, a wrong day. That's why it repeats back what it added, and you can say "move it" or "delete it" to fix it.

What does it do with Canvas?

It reads your Canvas calendar feed, a link you copy from Canvas once. Exams and quizzes go on your Dimpy calendar, other assignments when you ask, and what's due shows up in your morning brief. It never logs in to Canvas, so it can't see grades or submit anything.

Why Google Calendar only?

One student is building this, and one calendar is what can be done well first. Apple Calendar would need your Apple ID app password, which the pilot won't hold.

What if a chat app changes something?

Dimpy depends on each app's developer access, which it doesn't control. If an app changes or ends it, Dimpy may stop working there, and you'll get an email saying so.

Why does the waitlist ask where I text?

To learn which app to build after iMessage and GroupMe. Your answer doesn't commit you to anything.

Who can join?

College students 18 or older. You need a Google account and an account in the app Dimpy supports.

Built by one student

I'm Ethan Sachdeva, a college student. I built the first Dimpy as a personal project, because chats are where plans get made and where they scroll away before they reach a calendar.

The pilot is a version any student can use, rebuilt with stricter rules: it only reads messages sent to it, it keeps no long-term memory of your chats, and the AI it runs on stores nothing. I'm building it on my own, part time, so the first pilot will be small.

Independent project. Not made by or affiliated with GroupMe, Microsoft, Apple, Meta, Discord, Google, Instructure (Canvas) or any school. For college students 18 or older.
